I was born in Johannesburg and I’m a city girl through and through. Don’t get me wrong, I love mountain ranges and I’m always so affected by the vastness of the natural world- as you’ll come to see. But city-scapes have a special place in my heart, and this one in particular.
Cities have these distinct personalities, they’re much like people. I think you’ll find that if you immerse yourself enough in them, you begin to learn their characters. Jozi doesn’t always have the best reputation. It’s a little like that black sheep in the family, while Cape Town puts twinkles in everyone’s eyes. But Johannesburg is, albeit rough and tough, electric with energy and life.
It’s a city rediscovering itself in renewal and revival – artistically, musically and intellectually. There is something distinct in the combination of the old, run-down city streets bursting with new colours and sounds.
Johannesburg is a really exciting place to be right now.
